Charles Sorhagen, an immigrant from Holland, founded Sorhagen's
Theatrical Transfer Company in 1840 in Newark, New Jersey. The
company serviced vaudeville companies and theatre districts, in
Newark and New York, moving every act from Jack Benny to Minsky's
Burlesque and Ringling Brothers Circus. Between 1920 and 1940, the
Sorhagen's operated the only union moving and storage company in
the area. Theatrical moves comprised the bulk of activity through
the 1900's and remained part of the company's business until the
1950's. By then, the second and third generation of Sorhagen's,
Peter and his son James, managed the company. They expanded into
the household goods business in 1953 when the company acquired
Crofutt and Smith in Orange, New Jersey.
A few years later, upon the death of James, his wife Hilda found
herself in charge. With three young children at home, very little
experience and incredible strength, Hilda rose to the challenge and
managed the firm for 14 years.
Hilda was a guiding force for her three children who took over
the moving company during the 1970s. The fourth generation of
Sorhagens (Dennis, Roger, & Barbara) then ran the organization
through the 1990s, until the departure of Barbara and the addition
of the fifth generation in the person of Jim Sorhagen.
Until 1985 Crofutt & Smith was located in Orange, New
Jersey. Due to tremendous growth, Crofutt & Smith built a
14,000 square foot facility in Landing, New Jersey. With the
opening of a 37,000 square foot warehouse in Mine Hill, New Jersey,
only corporate offices and a small warehouse remain at the Landing
facility. A mid-Atlantic division in Raleigh, North Carolina, with
another 39,000 square foot warehouse and office, opened in 1993.
Most recently at the beginning of 2005, Crofutt & Smith opened
a facility in St. Charles, MO, just outside of St. Louis.
"A family moving families through five generations," Crofutt
& Smith looks forward to many more years of high quality
service and total commitment to our customers and employees. We
promise to deliver the "Right Move" - exceeding all
